OECD Report has no solutions – We need a socialist alternative
Here Joe Higgins responds to the recent OECD report, which called for a comprehensive programme of anti worker and unemployed reforms. Joe argues for an real alternative, not simply ICTUs 10 point plan, but a socialist solution.
Let’s be clear, the OECD and other institutions such as the ESRI, should not be viewed as dispassionate economic commentators with no political axe to grind.
The OECD’s backing of the government’s programme of cuts to public spending coupled with a recommendation of immediate flat tax increases is necessary in their view for the future normal functioning of capitalism where the profit of big business comes before the needs of the vast majority.
And what is the prize for working people and unemployed for accepting this medicine according to the OECD? ‘Permanently lower’ living standards!
We have been deprived of a genuine debate on the future for Irish society. The lack of balance far exceeds even that which was experienced during the Lisbon debate. 99% of the views presented are predicated on not questioning the profit system itself.
ICTU’s ten point plan, which is being held up a the alternative, is inadequate insofar as it too does not fundamentally question the capitalist system. Consequently it will neither enthuse active support by working people nor placate the political, economic and media establishment who have being pummeling the leadership of ICTU for the last week.
The Socialist Party continues to campaign to present a comprehensive democratic socialist alternative to the political, economic and media establishment who are intent on totally demoralising working people, the youth and the unemployed into meekly accepting their offensive.
