IBEC’s “yes for jobs” campaign a sick joke?

Posted by Joe Higgins On September - 2 - 2009

I notice IBEC’s have put up pro-Lisbon posters across the country proclaiming “yes for jobs”, linking the accepting of the treaty with job protection. Is this some form of sick joke from the bosses organisation?

lisbon poster2The true record of IBEC’s members regarding the preservation of jobs tells a different story. While IBEC do not publicly list which employers belong to it we can draw some conclusions when we look at the recent record of the companies to which some of its high profileofficers belong.

Donal Byrne of Cadbury’s Ireland and Director of IBEC has overseen 200 sackings this year. Tony O’Brien of C&C and Director of IBEC pushed through 120 redundancies at Bulmers. Gary McCann of Smurfit Kappa and member of the Board of IBEC has overseen 140 job cuts

All these highly profitable firms have laid waste to the livelihoods of hundreds of workers and their families. How many more examples could be cited from the ranks of IBEC’s members? How IBEC’s mock concern for jobs must feel like a sick joke to many of the people they have thrown on the dole queue?

  1. The number of people fired does not necessarily show the strength of the workforce by a company. As our country evolves it is normal that the workforce has to evolve with it. As in Dell’s example where the manufacturing is closed and replaced by a marketing and sales related positions. I know it is a oversimplifying a bit by just comparing it to Dell replacing the Blue Collar Jobs, with the jobs higher on the pay scale.

The same might not be the case with chocolate and drinks companies mentioned. What I do know that if I would be running any manufacturing in Ireland, I would work hard on getting that part of the company outsourced as soon as possible, to be able to have a product competitively priced.

It might be a short term gain to keep the chocolate and drinks manufacturing in Ireland, but on a long run, we will overprice ourselves and get into the position where we cannot export any of those products manufactured in Ireland and have to close the whole companies. It does sound as a better solution to outsource what we can and keep what we need in Ireland. That will make sure that we do have products we can place on the global markets, and that our Irish businesses will be able to grow (and hire more staff over here!).

    Is my maths right? :)

    Hi
Excellent response Joe. And while we are at it how does this square with their slash and burn attitude to public sector jobs.
However their campaign IS clever. YES to Jobs, YES to EUROPE etc.
The best way to counter their clever campaign has to be to target their weakness – CREDIBILITY CREDIBILITY CREDIBILITY -.
Nobody in the YES Campaign has credibility. Every damn one of them is campaigning to ingratiate themselves with someone.
Establishment Political Parties ingratiating themselves with the Brussels elite, various “Civil Society Groups” ingratiating themselves with Leinster House and Brussels, Academics ingratiating themselves with Brussels for access to Euroswill funds.
IBEC have their hands out permanently for Euroswill and are well represented in Brussels.
Simple question: Is it IBEC members’ policy to cut labour costs in all parts of their businesses. If they were honest their posters would read YES FOR JOB CUTS.
Back to my main point. USE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO DISCREDIT THEIR MOTIVATION. Its always personal self interest. The people know this already. We just need to articulate it for them publicly. Regards Brian
