With its vote to formally support the Lisbon Treaty, the Green Party has now utterly and totally capitulated to the economic and political establishment.
The last tiny vestige of independence manifested in last year’s Green Party Conference vote not to formally endorse Lisbon is buried along with the Party’s formal policies on so many other issues.
This endorsement of a Treaty that intensifies militarisation and institutionalises the armaments industry will further alienate young people from the Green Party as well as the very wide anti war constituency which opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and objects to Shannon Airport being used as a facility for US occupation troops – policies which the Green party once supported but have also totally betrayed in government.
