Joe Higgins Condemns Treatment of Dock Workers
Dock workers have been on strike at Marine Terminals Ltd against compulsory redundancies and wage cuts for three weeks. Here Joe speaks out against their treatment and calls for all workers to support them.
The treatment of these dock workers by Marine Terminals Ltd is an outrageous attack on workers’ rights. The company is looking to impose compulsory redundancies on some and wage cuts on those left behind. This is another illustration of the brutal race to the bottom with companies seeking to take advantage of the economic crisis to force down wages and conditions.
The company’s agenda is clear – they want a low paid workforce with poor working conditions and no job security. All workers have a duty to support these workers’ struggle. If Marine Terminals Ltd gets away with their attack, other workers at the docks and elsewhere will be next. The workers’ picket lines should be honoured.
The stand of these workers and those who support them in the Dublin Port Workers Support Group is to be applauded. I call on supporters to attend the demonstration tomorrow morning.
If you can, please attend the solidarity protest tomorrow of residents from both sides of the Liffey leaving from Ray’s Shop on Sean More Rd and St. Joeseph’s School at East Wall Road at 10.30am.
