Joe Higgins on Greens’ “Squalid Opportunism”

Posted by Joe Higgins On May - 19 - 2009

The Green Party’s endless capacity for political posturing while in Opposition has obviously lost nothing in translation to government, as its call for a renegotiation of the Programme for Government shows.

Recent opinion polls have shown clearly that the Green’s were delusional in imagining that they could escape opprobrium for their government’s savage onslaught on the living standards of working people.

Like Fianna Fail, the Greens have been found out. In two short years just about everything they claimed to stand for – from opposition to US warplanes in Shannon to support for public transport – has been jettisoned in the interests of staying in power through a squalid deal with Fianna Fail.

Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, had the audacity to say on RTE this morning that among the issues a renegotiation of the Programme for Government should entail would be ‘to prioritise public transport’. This a few weeks after 120 Dublin buses and 290 drivers have been axed from the capital’s public transport system!

Green Party Leader, John Gormley, and his cohorts are even moredelusioned if they think that they can fool people with this transparent opportunism. The message from the door and from the streets is that the electorate, having wiped out Fianna Fail for their culpability for the economic disaster, will then wipe their feet on the Greens for having made themselves the doormat for Fianna Fail’s policy of making ordinary working people pay for a crisis that is not of their making
